Zakros , is the nearest village to Xerocampos (10 minutes drive); it’s linked by about 10 kilometres of a panoramic and enchanting road (asphalted in 2008).

It's a traditional rural village (approximately 800 inhabitants) not of great architectonic beauty but dipped between the olive groves (its main wealth) and between sour and semi-deserted mountains, in a landscape with strong contrasts and of sure tourist interest.

To be seen the spring of pure water (that waters the cultivations of the valley), the nice Orthodox Church in the centre of the village and the gorges of the Death Valley (that lead to Kato Zakros).

Here you will find four mini-markets (do not expect great things, some are indeed mini-mini), two pub, a cafeteria (only open at late evening), two good restaurants (one open only in summer time), a pastry shop, a butcher shop, some generic stores, two garages (good only for small emergency repairs), a service-station, a small hotel (not to be recommended from the hygienic point of view), two tobacconist’s, a barber (not to lose if you want to get back of 50 years!!) and five kafenii (the traditional Greek bars, points of meeting for all the old ones of the village, anciently reserved to men, where the time always seems to have stopped, between cards or tavlis plays, dishes of mezè, glasses of rakì or retsina and interminable arguments on every possible subject).
