KATO ZAKROS Weather

Kato Zakros,

which is part of the municipality of Sitia from 2011,

is located in the eastern part of the

island of Crete,

at the coordinates

+35° 5' 53.556" North, 26° 15' 47.772" East,

in a natural basin at the mouth of

a gorge of great beauty (called Death Valley!)

entirely walkable

along the European trekking path E4,

that leads after 5,4 km to Zakros.

Kato Zakros

does not have a central structure that can be referred to as "village" or "hamlet" but it is a nice and quiet sea resort where you will find a handful of houses overlooking a beautiful bay and inhabited only in summer by fishermen and tourists.

The National census of 2011 estimated a resident population of only 20 people

(source Wikipedia.gr).

This scarce building development is related to a rigid conservative constraint due to the presence here of important archaeological remains of a Minoan palace (the fourth-largest on the island of Crete).

The area appears so to the visitor as virtually intact and well preserved, very green in the valley and rocky and arid in the extensive reliefs

that surround it, with a nice total glance enriched by the clarity and transparency of the sea.

Kato Zakros is far away from mass tourism, instead common to several other parts of the island, and so here people come to visit the archaeological findings or to make a holiday by the sea calm and without confusion in its beautiful and long beach (about 700 meters of beach mainly of fine gravel) or even try their hand at walking and hiking on the different paths available.

On the small promenade of Kato Zakros then you will find four good tavernas offering traditional cuisine and for those who look for some nightlife there is a pub/cafeteria always open in the summer until late at night.

To get to Kato Zakros coming from Heraklion, the shortest way is on the New National Road E75 on the north coast passing through Neapolis , Agios Nikolaos , Pahia Ammos , Sitia Palekastro and Zakros, a total of 168 km. with a journey time computable to about 3 hours in total.

Immediately after Zakros, before the great cooperative oil mill, you will find also the junction which taken on the right will lead to Xerocampos and continuing towards Ziros will link to the southeast coast of Crete.
