Sissi

is a small village with a population of

953 inhabitants, as per the greek national census of 2011, (source Wikipedia.gr), situated on the north coast of Crete just inside the border of the Lassithi province.

Its inhabited center is built around a deep and naturally

sheltered cove, since always used as a fishing harbor.

This tiny

pleasant "fjord" is used today

also as a starting point for tourist boats that organize, in summer, daily trips to visit the surrounding coastal area as

far as to the port of Hersonissos.

In Sissi the beaches are not famous as in other areas of the island (here prevails definitely the rock and not the sand!).

The few sandy ones available are small (Boùfou, Avlaki and Kalimera Kriti) or artificial (such the one at the entrance to the port) and in summer are colonized with umbrellas and sunbeds.

The village is attractive, however, because although it has many hotel facilities, often of considerable size, it does not appear as chaotic as the not far coast stretch that begins at 5 km from here (from Malia onwards).

Sissi instead keeps a quiet rhythm and different characteristics, with low houses, some colored alleys with craft shops, a beautiful marina with the vivid Mediterranean colors and an extensive range of traditional

taverns which invite to taste traditional Greek cuisine and fresh fish that here never lacks.

The position of Sissi (at coordinates +35° 18' 24.870" North, +25° 31' 20.049" East) is also great for touring the central and eastern part of the island of Crete since placed at a short distance from the airport (40.5 km.) and the port of Heraklion (43.6 km.) and is about 2,5 km. from the main highway (E75), which connects (28.4 km.) the capital of the Prefecture of Lassithi, Agios Nikolaos (all distances taken from Google earth).

Near Sissi are worth visiting the small traditional village of Epano Sissi (1.5 km.), the beautiful Orthodox Monastery dedicated to Agios Iorgos Selinari, nestled between the rugged rocks of the

homonymous gorge, and is also interesting the mountain village of Vrahasi (7 km.), placed in amphitheatrical position at an altitude of 360 meters at the base of Mount Anavlochos.

Do not forget, to complete your stay in this area, to visit the beautiful ruins of the important Minoan palace of Malia , one of the most important archaeological sites of the island, which is less than 4 km far from Sissi.
