Paleochora

is a pleasant and quiet village, with a resident population of 1.675 people (source Wikipedia.gr from the national census of 2011), located on a small peninsula in the far south-west of Crete.

Overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea, is the place that can boast the highest average annual temperatures in Greece (source Wikipedia.de).

A tourist destination,

Paleochora,

known since the early 70s (initially as "historic" meeting place, along with Matala, of the hippy generation of the time), still appreciated today for its beautiful beaches, the great tranquility of its village and the beauty of the places that surround it, with hills sloping down to the sea and the background to the east of the massif of the "Lefkà Ori" (the "white Mountains"

covered with snow until late May) and its seven peaks over two thousand meters, with the highest among them (the Pachnes), which reaches 2,453 meters above sea level.

It is not negative in this picture of nature still largely untouched even the presence of the traditional greek Meltemi...... which is quite normal to find here in the summer, as in almost the whole island of Crete, and freshens the temperatures sometimes tropical of the area (quite normal given the parallel where we are +35° 13' 49.604" North, +23° 40' 54.145" East), but it is difficult, luckily, that it can prevent the bathing because it comes

from the mountains and tends to flatten the sea and not to bring wave to shore. This element is also beloved by windsurfers who frequent these waters.

On the beaches of the village of Paleochora, in particular in the larger (a beautiful sandy beach of

about a kilometer) facing west and called Pachià Ammos, you will find further options to practice water sports, here you can rent canoes and there is also a diving center, to discover the beautiful seabed of the area, and here you can

also amuse practicing jet ski and banana jet ski.

The second beach of the village (with pebbles), Chalìkia, is facing east and has no recreational activities available, but only umbrellas and loungers. Other equipped sandy beaches are available 4 kilometers to the east (Gianiskàri) or west (Gramèno).

Every morning then from the small pier in the center of Paleochora depart the ferries of the

Anendyk Line, which connect to Sougia, Agia Roumèli, Loutrò and Chora Sfakion along the south-west coast or directly with the island of Gavdos, the last European territory to the south.

From the same pier there is also a daily boat towards the beautiful beaches of Elafonissi, the tickets are issued by "Selino Travel" (+30 28230 42272, Fax: +30 28230 83011).

With the same boat is also possible, several times a week, to take part in excursions out at sea in search of dolphins.

For those who want to discover the mountains, the hiking trails and the landscapes of Crete, the possibilities are many, because not only Paleochora is

on the route of the european path E4, but from the village center, leaves every day (at about 06.00 am) the bus to Omalos and the Gorge of Samaria (the longest in Europe) with a return late afternoon (around 18:30) by boat from Agia Roumeli.

Trekking lovers can not also miss the other available paths, among the most interesting in Crete, such as Paleochora-Elafonissi or the Gorge of Agia Irini-Sougia or even the Paleochora-Lissos-Sougia.

We conclude this short space dedicated to Paleochora remembering that the village is well equipped and you will find a bank (with ATM), gas station, garage, post office, the regional Ktel bus stop, pharmacy, medical service and shops of various kinds.

Paleochora is 71 kilometers far from Chanià and can be reached, in about an hour and twenty minutes, by the New National Road E75 to the junction of Tavronitis, and from here left where you will take the road in the direction Kakopetros, Selia, Kantanos and Plemeniana.
