Kìssamos-Kastèli

is a coastal town, seat of the municipality, in the province of Chanià, with a population of 4.236 inhabitants (source Wikipedia.gr from the national census of 2011).

Is located in the extreme northwest of the island of Crete, at the coordinates +35° 29' 45.845" N., +23° 39' 15.333" E.

Thanks to its geographical position Kìssamos-Kastèli is not just a natural and mandatory crossroads to visit the west coast of Crete (all the roads depart from here) but is also an obligatory point of passage if you want to reach the Greek mainland avoiding the long journey to Piraeus and Athens because from its small harbor named Trachilos, twice a week, departs the ferry to the islands  of Kìthira,

Antikythira and with final destination Gìthio, town located south of the Peloponnese.

But this very location, although "privileged", has brought in Kìssamos-Kastèli an almost exclusively itinerant tourism, that takes little advantage of the beautiful and long beaches of its coastline and that rather prefers to reach from here, on a daily basis, the many beautiful destinations of the area.

The choice in this respect is very wide, ranging from the Kòrikos peninsula, where you'll find the spectacular lagoon of Bàlos and the nearby island of Gramvoussa, to the long sandy

beaches of Falassarna, to the pink sandy stretches of Elafonissi or the remote promontory of Paleochora, full of other beautiful beaches too, just to quote the most famous

destinations suitable for a holiday dedicated to a sea among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.  It is also easy, starting from Kìssamos-Kastèli, to give a different quality to the

discovery of the western part of Crete because the area is rich in natural beauty (gorges and treks for every taste and difficulty) and archaeological findings and are

certainly interesting the visits to various locations such as, among others: Polyrìnia (ruins of Roman era, the aqueduct of Hadrian and the church of the 99 Martyrs), Eghnion (sanctuary dedicated to the god Apollo),

Potamìda (ancient Greek secret school), Agia Sofìa (church in the cave), Chrisoskalìtissa (Byzantine monastery), Lousakiès (Orthodox churches of the Venetian era), Kalàthenes (Venetian castle and villas), Drapaniàs (Villa Trevisan) Míthimna (remains of the city of the Minoan age), Kefàli (frescoed churches and Venetian tower called "Kallergon"), Ròkka (Acropolis), Gonià (Byzantine monastery) or Diktina (sanctuary dedicated to Artemis).

But if you want to spend a vacation a little more sedentary and not always

itinerant, Kìssamos-Kastèli is a pleasant and cozy seaside town with leisurely pace, well equipped to accommodate its guests and that can offer them not only a beautiful sea with its many activities, but also its small city center,  with many

traces of ancient architecture, and well stocked with taverns (the excellent regional cuisine with prices still very affordable), shops and craft workshops and premises underlying the nightlife (some equipped with internet connection and fast wireless).

But you will discover the soul of Kìssamos-Kastèli not only through the beach life, the relax and the evening walks, it will be simpler to learn about it, through the friendly and proud hospitality, truly Cretan, of its inhabitants, through its Orthodox churches,

perfectly preserved, and through the traces that history and the passage of many ancient peoples have left here and that you can meet in the streets, including pieces of Venetian ramparts, Roman Greek and Mycenaen ruins, and in its small museum which of all this is the keeper.

Kìssamos-Kastèli is located 37 km from Chanià and can be reached via the New National Road 75 in about 35 minutes.
