Zakros is the nearest village to (10 minutes) connected
by 10 Km of panoramic and enchanting road, asphalted in 2008. |

It's a traditional rural village (approximately 800 inhabitants) not of great architectonic beauty but dipped between the olive groves (its main wealth) and between rough almost deserted mountains, in a landscape with strong contrasts and of sure tourist interest. |

To be seen the springs of pure water (which waters the cultivations of the valley), the beautiful Orthodox Church in the town center and the Gorges of the Valley of Death (leading to Kato Zakros). In Zakros you will find a pharmacy (in the central square, opened in December 2009), three mini-markets (but do not expect great things because some are really mini-mini), a greengrocer, two cafeterias, a pub (open only late at night), a good restaurant (the "Napoleon", which is open all year and offers an interesting traditional cuisine and a fast free internet wireless connection), a tasty pastry shop (managed by a local all-female cooperative), a butcher shop, some generic stores, two garages (valid for small emergency repairs), a gas station, a small "hotel", a tobacco store and a barber shop (not to be missed if you want to skip back 50 years!). |

Inevitable the Kafenia, the traditional Greek bars, meeting places for all the elders of the village, formerly reserved for men, where time always seems to have stopped, between card and tavlis games (the Cretan backgammon), dishes of meze (small appetizers), glasses of raki (the local brandy) or Retsina (flavored wine) and endless discussions on every possible topic, Zakros has three, all located in the central square. In the village there is the stop of the regional bus line Ktel, departing from Sitia, direction Palekastro and continuing on to Kato Zakros, the frequency is daily in summer. |
