In the part of coast that leads from Gouduras to Makrigialos at the extreme South-East of Crete you will find the evocative orthodox monastery of Moni Kapsà and the small village of Kalò Nerò |
|
Built on the mountain, overlooking to the South of the Libic Sea, Moni Kapsà is the ancient guardian of this area of sea coast and of the path that starts here and follows the Gorge of Pervolakia; walk still used today from the shepherds for the yearly move of herds and from the
trekking lovers. |

The fortified monastery has its origins in the XV° century but was completely destroyed during the period of Ottoman occupation (1669-1898).
The reconstruction works began in 1861 thanks the Yerontoyannis hermit.
Today
Moni Kapsà deserves a
stop in order to admire this

of cretan coast still untouched from the tourism, with few beaches but with several peaceful small bays, like those of the small village of Kalò Nerò, overlooking a sea with crystalline colors.
An area that lives still mostly
of rural-pastoral economy where it will not be difficult for you to
collect images as this |

taken in June 2007; the gather of the herds in natural coves roughly fenced, here named “Mandre”, in order to carry out the shearing.
An ancient activity but by now of insufficient economic value, due to the price of the wool per kilo that this year has been of 25 cent! An chance however of encounter that almost always becomes a party.
From Xerokampos the best and more panoramic road to reach Moni Kapsà and Kalò Nerò is direction Ziros but as soon as you pass the entrance of the military base you must immediatly turn on the left for Agia Triada and continue then on the new road for Aterinolaco (the ugly thermoelectrical plant l!) from here you will reach Gouduras and the south coastal road that reconnects then to the crossroad of Analipsi for Makrigialos or for Sitia. |
