Agios Ioannis is located in a suggestive valley overlooking the sea, 9 km. far from the beaches of Koutsounari and 18 km. from Ierapetra.

The village abandoned by its original inhabitants had fallen into a strong inevitable degradation, but in recent years, many foreign visitors have given a new life to many of the old houses, renovating, in most cases, while respecting the original architecture.

The result, even if incomplete because there are still many houses waiting to be renovated, is for sure positive and deserves a visit to see how sometimes tourism is not only urbanisation and destruction of the coastal areas but also a precious resource for the recovery and enhancement of history, culture and environments that should be otherwise lost.

In the village you will find a traditional tavern open also in winter time.

Agios Ioannis can be reached in about an hour and half drive from Xérocambos,

direction Ziros - Makrigialos.
